Sunset in color

Shot a random roll of expired Kodak Gold 200 in a point-and-shoot – Samsung Maxima Zoom 90i, which was also sold as the Rollei Prego 90. I like the performance, but the camera is a bit too chunky to be a handy carry-around.

Still, I like the rich color of the sunset light captured in these images.

I shot the Santacolor 100 in a Konica C35 AF

New film, old camera. I love the original Konica C35 line of compact rangefinders. I have a couple, including the FD with the 38mm f1.8 lens, a model that was sold as the Auto S3 in the U.S. So I had to try the camera that was Konica’s first auto focus effort.

This was a camera that hadn’t age well. The auto focus was iffy and the camera felt awkward in my hands. I just didn’t enjoy shooting it, although the images turned out mostly fine.

Santacolor 100, on the other hand, didn’t disappoint. I signed on to the Kickstarter (maybe some other crowdfunding site?) and got an early batch last winter. I was drawn by the color of the sample images, especially how the reds turned out – somewhat desaturated but somehow still vibrant. The looks reminds me of Lomochrome Metropolis, which I also like when I manage to match the subject to what the film does well.

Ever heard of a Samsung Maxima Zoom 90i?

I was looking for a point-and-shoot zoom to add to my collection of cameras with at least 28mm lens on the wide end came across this number. I’d never heard of it and couldn’t find much about it online, but after looking at the specs, I came to realize that it’s a clone of the Rollei Prego 90 – sans the famous label – at a fraction of the price.

The camera is quite chunky, but comes loaded with features, among them a 28-90 zoom, f3.6-9.8, but I shot an expired roll of Kodak Max 400 so I really can’t fairly judge how it renders color. Still, I think this one’s a keeper.

hand-tinted vibes with Lomochrome Purple

I shot a roll of Lomography Purple last summer with the Fuji Mini Dual, a twin lens point-and-shoot, a compact number that let’s you toggle between 28mm (which I love in a point-and-shoot) and 45mm. I’ve found that these two focal length suits my shooting needs in most situations, though I tend to favor 35mm and 50mm in rangefinders and SLRs.

I have difficulty picturing what the final images will look like when taking the photos, but with a little tweaking, I love the vintage hand-tinted look that’s com across on these.

Figuring Out Lomochrome Purple

Like Lomochrome Metropolis, it took me a couple of tries before I began to figure out this film. My first pass, the images looked nothing like those I saw others creating. The trick was in the editing, and once that clicked, I started getting a muted hand-tinted look that I really liked.

These images come from two rolls taken on two cameras, a Canon A1 with a FD 50mm f1.2 (the cheap one), and a Fuji Discovery Mini Dual point-and-shoot.

Back from Japan: Part 3 – Canon Prima Mini

Near Sensōji, Asakusa, Tokyo

This was the real surprise of the bunch. I picked up this auto-everything point-and-shoot from the local thrift shop for $1, saving it from the tub of old cameras. Camera comes with a 32mm f/3.5 lens, which proved to be more than respectable. In fact, my wife looked at the pictures and asked which camera they had come from.

I only shot one roll of Kodak Gold 200 with this. The film was from a batch I had picked up at a Salvation Army shop not knowing if they were any good. The test roll proved to be OK, so I took a couple of rolls on the trip. This was the camera for real quick snaps and when I thought I might need a flash. It was also my widest lens, so I occasionally pulled it out when I wanted that perspective. I’m thinking I should have pulled this one our more often.

Taking to the road: Decisions, decisions

Heading out at the end of the week for my annual summer vacation, and it’s time to pick at kit to take on the road. As this trip involves flying, I’m forced to cut down my gear to what I can pack into a small camera bag. I use a small Timbuk2 messenger bag with a home-bade reinforced bottom pad and a Domke two-compartment insert. This gives me room for two bodies and several lenses, plus various accessories. This trip, though, I will go lighter.

At this point, I’ve settled on my Fed 2 with a three-lens kit — Jupiter 8, Jupiter 12 and the Elmar 9cm; Olympus XA; and a point and shoot, a Canon Prima Mini which sports a 32mm f3.5 lens ($1 at the thrift store). I like the idea of the wide lens, but I’m still on my first roll, which I hope to finish off before the trip so I can take a look. Even if I don’t manage this, I think the camera will stay in my kit as a risk worth taking. I like the idea of having a small point and shoot as this is a family vacation and having a quick shooter should come in handy.

I’ve got an A11 flash on the way, and I’ll pack that as well if it arrives in time. I’ve misplaced by Voigtlander meter, so I’ve packed the old, reliable Sekonic L248. Also coming along are yellow, orange and red filters, a Leitz VIOOH 35-135 viewfinder, and a couple of lens hoods.

Last, but not least, are the film: Tri-X and Fuji Superia 400. I’ll keep the Fed loaded with the Tri-X, and start with the Superia in the XA and Canon.
