Sunset in color

Shot a random roll of expired Kodak Gold 200 in a point-and-shoot – Samsung Maxima Zoom 90i, which was also sold as the Rollei Prego 90. I like the performance, but the camera is a bit too chunky to be a handy carry-around.

Still, I like the rich color of the sunset light captured in these images.

Reflx Lab Color 400

I bought a couple of rolls because they were cheap – plus only $5 shipping. I don’t shoot color much, but I took a trip to Colorado in September for a wedding and took along my auto-everything Olympus Stylus Epic as a second camera that took up no space. I like the was this film renders color, especially how the blues are saturated.

A little halation to go with that Tungsten-balanced film

I had a roll of Reflx Lab 800 Tungsten but for some reason I shot most of it in daylight. I did manage to make a few images at night to catch some of that famous halation. Overall, I happy with this film, though I’m not sure I’ll be buying any more anytime soon (I do have another roll in the fridge). While the last several posts have been in color, I generally prefer black and white.

Field days

Some daylight images made with Reflx Lab 800 Tungsten film. Even with a warming filter, balancing the color was bit of a trick. I wonder if having so much green in the image had something to do with that.

Daylight photography on 800 tungsten film with a warming filter

I’m trying out a few rolls of different film stocks from a company called Reflx Lab. These are film available from other companies, re-spooled stuff such as 800 tungsten, Eastman 5222 XX and panchromatic 400. The film comes cheaper than most places, and with only $5 shipping per order, Reflx Lab keeps things affordable.

First up is the 800T, complete with that halation glow.

For this outing, I was out during the day, so I used a warming filter for better color balance. I have to say I like the results.

A little state park that was off my radar

We had planned an outing to one of our regular state parks when we found out that we couldn’t take our dog along. A searched turned up Holbrook State Park in Sheffield, which had no restrictions.

I had never heard of this park and it turns out it’s unstaffed, which might account for its lack of restrictions. Holbrook turned out to be a pleasant surprise with good hiking (though quite muddy following the wet summer) around a series of ponds and up which led to sweeping views from surrounding cliffs as a reward.

First roll: Silversalz 250D

A while back, I bought four rolls of Silversalz 250D, always in the hunt for interesting film stock that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Here are a few images from the first roll.

The film, sold out of Germany, is listed a 13.70 Euros, which comes to about $14.50 a roll, but that includes developing and scanning in the price of the film.

Here’s how the company’s website describes the film: “Made with untouched KODAK Vision3 motion picture film like it is used in Hollywood.”

Once you’re done shooting a roll, you ship it back to Silversalz with the code included with your purchase. A few weeks later, they send you a link via email where you can download the scans. There’s a catch, though. Getting your negative backs costs extra – $18.85 with shipping.

So what about the film it self. I shot the first roll in my Nikon FA with a 50mm Nikkor f1.4 The scans are done at 4K with a flat color profile, which leaves you plenty of latitude to play with the image. I’m happy with the overall outcome, but I don’t shoot color much and at the price, I don’t think I’ll be turning to Silbersalz very often.

I bought a 645 back for my Hasselblad 500 CM a while back, but I finally tried it out this summer taking it along on a beach vacation on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. I was shooting Kodak Gold 200, and from the results, I think I would have liked it better underexposed a half stop or maybe even a full stop. Still, the colors pop.

The only lens I have for the camera is the Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f2.8, a lovely lens. Having just that one lens vastly simplifies matters, and that simplicity seems to match the way I like to shoot medium format cameras.

I wish the outfit was lighter and a bit more compact. The bulk and weight keeps me from taking the outfit on trips unless I’m driving. I’m still searching for that perfect 120 camera for when I have to fly.
