Voigtlander Perkeo II

This photo was shot on a Voigtlander Perkeo II medium format camera from the 1950s. Despite taking 6×6 images on 120 film, the camera fits in a coat pocket when folded up. The 80mm f3.5 lens is a basic four-element design, and the image quality declines rapidly in anything less than well lit. But I like this image with its rich, deep colors from the Fuji Pro 400H color print film that almost looks like an oil painting.

Some people might take this shot as a statement on how new development is overpowering the traditional buildings around downtown Burlington. The very wide perspective of the Voigtlander 15mm helps give the office building on the right a touch of menace as it looms over the old church steeple.

Wide Shot of a Narrow Space

This was shot with a Voigtlander 15mm lens, with a very wide perspective that I’m still getting used to. I like the lines in this shot.

Playing around with a Perkeo II

Green Hill Pond July 2013

Green Hill Pond July 2013

Finally getting around to putting up a new post. I took out a Voigtlander Perkeo II I picked up a few months ago for a try. The camera is a pocketable folding medium format that shoots 6×6 frames. I liked the Perkeo I for its size, but the II comes with a higher-grade lens. This was shot a couple of months ago on vacation to Rhode Island, a saltwater pond connected to the ocean in South Kingstown. The whole week was searingly hot and heavy with humidity, even in early morning, and the water was dead calm. Shot at 1/500 sec at f8.

Voigltander Bessa medium format folder

Boathouse dock, Lake Champlain

Pulled out another of my old medium format folders, this one a Voigtlander Bessa with the Anastigmat Skopar 10.5cm f4.5 lens in a Compur shutter.¬† This is the model without the cover over the viewfinder. It’s no beauty but does the job. The lens is reasonably clear and the bellows intact. The shutter speeds seem close enough throughout the range and the aperture opens and closes smoothly.

The biggest problem is that the red window on the back is fogged enough to make reading the film counter a pain. In fact, I skipped a couple of frames trying to read the number through the window. This seems to be a problem with a lot of the old folders.
