Vivian Maier – discovered photographer

By Vivian Maier

John Maloof stumbled across an incredible collection of photographs when he bid on a box of negatives from unclaimed storage. The photos are by a woman named Vivian Maier, a nanny who took her Rolleiflex out onto the Chicago streets and recorded everyday life for decades. Maier died in 2009, shortly before Maloof acquired the negatives.

Maloof is scanning and cataloguing the thousands of negatives and is posting them on his website. There’s also a short news video on the site that tells the story. The photos make clear Maier had an eye for images, able to pick out memorable scenes from everyday life. That she never publicly showed her work while alive is a shame. These are definitely worth spending some time with.
