Sierra Leone memories

Nyagbe-bo boh-bohs playing soccer with an orange

This is a bit of a departure from my usual posts. This photo was taken back in 1982 or 83, I’m guessing, when I was in Peace Corps in Sierra Leone. I was posted in the village of Nyagbe-bo in the Kenema District. These boys – boh bohs – were out in the rain playing a vigorous game of soccer with an orange. A real ball was a luxury, and I don’t think anyone had one except the school master.

This is one of my favorite photos, along with the one below of the boys playing in a swamp flooded during the rainy season. These photos were taken with my old Olympus Om-1, probably with the 50mm f1.4 lens. The light meter was dodgy and I had a hard time with exposure. The camera was stolen about halfway through my service, and I had to make do with a Kodak 110 for the rest of my time there.
